Why I started 3D printing, why learning CAD quickly became a project of its own, and what I’m trying to learn by designing and making my own parts.

Why I Got Into 3D Printing & CAD
I didn’t originally get a 3D printer because I wanted 3D printing itself to become one of my main projects.
I wanted another tool.
I was already working on electronics and other engineering projects, and being able to design a bracket, enclosure, mount, organizer, adapter, or completely custom part and then physically make it a few hours later seemed incredibly useful.
Once I actually started doing it, the CAD side became just as interesting as the printer.
Downloading somebody else’s model and printing it is useful, but it isn’t really the part of this that interests me most. I want to be able to look at a problem, figure out what I need, model it myself, and then make it.
That has meant learning Autodesk Fusion at the same time I’m learning the practical side of FDM printing.
Learning Both Sides at Once
A model working perfectly in CAD doesn’t mean it will work as a print.
I’ve had to start thinking about things like:
- what direction the layers will run
- where a part needs to flex
- how much clearance two printed parts need
- whether something needs supports
- whether an overhang is realistic
- how the part fits on the build plate
- how much material I’m using
- how long something will take to print
- and whether the material I’m using actually makes sense for the part
That has changed how I design.
Instead of finishing something in CAD and then figuring out how to print it, I’m getting better at considering how it will actually be made while I’m still modeling it.
Building Things I Actually Need
A lot of my first designs have come directly from things around me.
I’ve worked on filament storage, workshop organization, flexible bracelets and wrist straps, display hardware, mechanical test pieces, and parts for my other engineering projects.
Some are practical. Some are experiments. Some are just things I thought would be fun to figure out.
What they all give me is another reason to learn something new in CAD.
Iteration Is Part of It
One thing I’ve learned pretty quickly is that the first version doesn’t need to be the final version.
Sometimes the CAD is wrong.
Sometimes the print itself goes wrong.
Sometimes the part prints exactly how I designed it and then I realize the design was the problem.
All of those outcomes are still useful because they tell me what to change next.
Where I Am Now
I’m still early in the process, which is part of why I want to document it now instead of waiting until everything looks finished.
I want this project to show both the things that work and the process of getting there.
Over time I expect the printer, materials, tools, and complexity of the designs to change quite a bit.
The goal is pretty simple: keep getting better at turning an idea into a physical part that actually works.
